South Carolina Autism Society's Annual Conference Rescheduled!

It has come to our attention that the South Carolina Autism Society’s Annual Conference is scheduled on the same date as the Special Olympics Area 7 and Area 9 Spring Games.
Because of this conflict and its effect on registration, we have made the decision to postpone our Conference to this Fall.  We believe it is important to ensure that educators and families have the opportunity to support their athletes, and also attend an important conference to educate themselves on how they can better support their students and loved ones.
We have rescheduled our conference for Friday, October 7, 2016.  The time and location will remain the same.  Refunds will be available to all attendees and exhibitors for whom the new date is not convenient.  Please email scas@scautism.org if you should need to cancel.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to offer you the most informative Annual Conference possible.  Should you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our office at 803-750-6988 or scas@scautism.org

Stem Cell Treatment Shows Promise as Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

new ms treatment

(HealthLine News) Twenty years ago, Dr. Alan Tyndall, a rheumatologist at University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland, was faced with giving a 37-year-old mother a grim diagnosis.
Scleroderma, the autoimmune disease that pumps excess collagen into the body, was turning her pulmonary arteries into stone.
The disease would be fatal. Even a lung transplant couldn’t save her.
So Tyndall and his colleagues, including hematologist Dr. Alois Gratwohl, came up with a bold plan.
They reasoned that since the root of the problem was malfunctioning immune cells, maybe those cells should be annihilated.
In other words, they decided to purposely destroy the woman’s immune system.
Of course, they couldn’t take down the offending immune system and leave her with no defenses against future infections. They would have to rebuild it from the ground up.

Presenters:
Pat Satterfield, Center for AT Excellence/Tools for Life Network Partner

Your client has something called a PODD communication book that seems like it has way too many words for him. Your grandchildren have communication devices that they've owned for over 4 years and they've never really used them except to ask for their favorite snacks. So what do you do? Join us for an informative webinar that will provide you with strategies and solutions for teaching alternative augmentative communication (AAC) your clients whether they are currently in school, at work, or for community living. This presentation will provide 9 strategies for helping the AAC user learn to communicate using their own system.
