To unite people with all types of disabilities and raise awareness of the barriers that are common in our State.
To promote disability rights.

We Are Able 20:20 Project

In celebration of our 20th anniversary, we are launching our We Are Able 20:20 Campaign. 

We ask that during the month of February, you join our effort by making a $20 donation - and spreading the word to twenty of your closest friends!

20 years ago today, a group of people with disabilities opened SC's first Center for Independent Living, Able South Carolina (known then as Disability Action Center).

We have been promoting the Independent Living Philosophy ever since by empowering South Carolinians with disabilities to reach their independence and by promoting inclusion and equality within the community. We are so very proud by the fact that we didn't just learn our mission; we live it!

Thank you all for your support throughout the years and we are excited to see what we can achieve together in our next 20 years!

Assistive Technology in the Workplace

Join Able South Carolina and the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from two until four o'clock in the afternoon in our Columbia office for an insightful training on the available assistive technology for the workplace. Individuals with disabilities will get to learn about assistive technology, reasonable accommodations under The Americans with Disabilities Act, how to negotiate a reasonable accommodation, and hear stories from people who use assistive technology in the workplace.

Equipment Donation Drive!

Please share this information far and wide!

We’d love your help printing and distributing the Donation Drive Flyer (click  here) to churches, assisted living places, nursing homes, thrift stores, etc. Your help in getting the word out will make a huge difference in the amount of equipment provided to those who can’t afford it any other way.

Take the time to clean out your closets and garage! If you're not using or have outgrown equipment, there’s a good chance it would be useful to another person. Declutter your life and help others.

The South Carolina Assistive Technology Program (SCATP) and the Disability Action Center (DAC) are sponsoring an Equipment Donation Drive, in collaboration with the statewide SC Assistive Technology Expo on March 27, 2013 at Brookland Conference Center, West Columbia. We may arrange to pick up your equipment before the conference. If you are bringing equipment the day of the conference and you're attending the Expo, you can bring it directly to the Conference Center. If you aren't attending the conference, please call one of the numbers above and we can arrange pick up. If requested, donations can be tax deductible.

The Disability Action Center becomes Able South Carolina

Dear Friends-

The Disability Action Center has some exciting news! We are thrilled to announce that we will be changing our name to Able South Carolina. If you are familiar with our organization then you know that we believe that people with disabilities are able to live independent, active, and self-determined lives!         

Last year during an event called CreateAthon, a team of the most creative minds worked 24 hours straight to develop a new brand to more accurately reflect our mission.  They nailed it!

Our new name will be effective in February 2013. You may begin to see us identifying ourselves as Able South Carolina with signage and publications. Our website address and emails will be changing as well, but the DAC information will remain connected to our new website/email addresses for a while to allow for a smooth transition. We will share our new logo once the announcement for the release is official. Stay tuned for the big reveal and thanks for your ongoing support as we continue to strengthen our organization and advocacy efforts!
