New Affordable Care Resources from the National Disability Navigator Collaborative

New Affordable Care Resources from the National Disability Navigator Collaborative

The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) www.aahd.us is pleased to announce the establishment of an Affordable Care Act (ACA) National Disability Navigator Resource Collaborative (NDNRC). The 12 month collaborative is made possible by a one-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation www.rwjf.org. The NDNRC website will be launched on Dec. 1, 2013. The URL for the project website iswww.nationaldisabilitynavigator.org

The purpose of the project is to assist the development of cross-disability competence in ACA CMS funded navigator programs and consider how to assist state-based navigators, connectors and assisters. An estimated 3.5 million people between the ages of 16 and 65 with pre-existing medical conditions or disabilities are currently uninsured. Persons with disabilities lacking current health insurance face at least the following options as key elements of the Affordable Care Act go into effect in January 2014: Medicaid in their state, possible Medicaid buy-in in their state, possible Medicaid expansion in their state, and Exchange-Marketplace insurance coverage.

AMC Theatres (AMC) and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program.

In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC’s “Silence is Golden^®” policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned.

Service + Learning = A Winning Course

When preparing to teach their first Information Literacy course, Amy Edwards and Andrea Jarratt approached the task in an unusual way: They met with the S.C. Autism Society. The two reference librarians in USC's Thomas Cooper Library wanted to add a service component to the course, and they believed that the society could benefit from their pilot project.

The result of combining information literacy with a service project is a classroom full of students who are learning how to do research and help others at the same time.

“We are working with the Autism Society to develop an online manual to be used by parents of autistic children to describe service points and resources within the state,” Edwards said.

“We met with the Autism Society first to get the project started,” Edwards said. “The Libraries’ IT department built a form for us, and students are filling out the forms, then the information will be put on a database. We are handing all the information over to the Autism Society when complete. Everything we developed was with an eye toward giving it over to the S.C. Autism Society.”

A manual on the national level exists, but the South Carolina resource section isn’t strong, Jarratt said. She believed that the students could create a more comprehensive one.

“We want to teach information literacy as a lifelong skill,” said Jarratt. “We want students to know that these information literacy skills apply to your work, your personal life, your volunteer work.”
