"A Best Friend for James" Review by Kelly

Kelly’s Article

“A Best Friend for James”, written by Jeannie E. Casey Thomas with Rae Thomas and illustrated by Judy Doudoukjian and James Thomas, is about a boy named James who always wanted a pet cat.  He loves animals.  His first cat he had used to hiss at him and would never let him pet it.  Then his dad brought home a new cat he rescued from his job.  He named that cat Cocoa.  Because he was sweet like cocoa.  Every day when James was at school Cocoa would sleep in James’s chair.  And when he came home from school Cocoa would come up to him and purr at him.   At night Cocoa would sleep in his bed next to him.  James accidently let the cat outside when he went to play.  The cat was missing for a week.  He looked everywhere in the house but Cocoa wasn’t there.  He looked outside.  He looked around for the cat.  Then he found the cat stuck in the vent.  It was a good book.  But I wish it could have been longer story.  It was too short.

Kelly Doyle Book Review

"Very Shy" written By Barbara Shook Hazen and illustrated by Shirley Chan is about a girl named Nancy who is Very shy.  She always wanted to hide out.    She has a hard time speaking up for herself.  She has a special place where she felt safe.  She has 2 friends who lived down the street from her.  Their names are Amy and Andy.  They have been friends ever since they were babies.  And they liked her even though they disagreed with each other.  She loves to pretend that she could be anything she wanted in fantasy land.  But she could only do that in her own room.  I love this book because this book reminds me of me when I was little.  And now when I’m in my 30’s.  I feel like Nancy because I still feel very shy.  But only when I’m around one person.  I wish I knew why I’m shy around one person  and I’m not shy around everybody else.  But the other people I’m talking about are people I know.  I’m only shy around new people and that 1 person but that’s it.  Nobody else.  I have a special place where I feel safe.  In my room in front of the TV.  I only watch DVD’s.  Because 1. I don’t have cable.  And 2. Because I don’t want cable.  That is my fantasy land where I can pretend that I can do everything that I see on my DVD’s.

Kelly's Special Olympics Weekend

Special Olympics and What I did on April 20

This was the first competition of Special Olympics before I go to Fort Jackson. I did the 50 meter walk and the softball throw. I got second place in the 50 meter walk. It looked like I got first place because I was at the finish line first. But they said I got second place. Well hopefully I will get first place in the 50 meter walk when I go to Fort Jackson May 4-6. I got third place again this year in the softball throw. I’m getting tired of getting third place in the softball throw every year. They always put me in with the guys. That’s not fair because I can’t throw farther than the guys. But I had a lot of fun at the Owens Field. That’s where we went on April 20. That is what I did for Special Olympics. But I was supposed to go to the Joy prom that night. But I couldn’t go. I didn’t have a ride. After Special Olympics was over I got McDonald’s food then I went home. I had a great time on April 20. It was fun. On May 4-6 I’m going to Fort Jackson for Special Olympics. I’m going to do track and field. I will be in the 50 meter walk and the softball throw. I will be writing another article about Fort Jackson. Which I look forward to every year. I love Special Olympics. Special Olympics is my life.

Kelly Doyle Book Review

"No Time for Me" written by John M. Barrett is about a kid named Jimmy who feels left out of his family. He has a little sister named Kim and his parents. They both have jobs. They are lawyers. His parents are so busy with their jobs that they didn’t know that Jimmy was upset because he couldn’t see his parents that much. So that’s why he feels left out of his family. That’s why the book is called "No Time for Me." I loved this book. It was really good. The book made me cry because a long time ago when I was a kid, teenager and an adult I felt left out of my family. But I think everybody feels that way sometimes.

The Aktion Club Convention, by Kelly Doyle

image of dancer Kelly Doyle--"The first night I came to the convention I danced to NSYNC in the talent show. The next day we had a keynote speaker named Wilson Cherry. He talked about how the Aktion Club is a hero to everybody. And how it would help us in our life. I think he was a really great speaker. It made me think about what I can do with my life. And why I haven’ t done all of the things I want to do. I know that I need to change that. But I do have a job working one day a week. I figure that since I can’ t find another job that maybe I should start my own business. But it is hard to find customers for my business. And that is what I learned from the keynote speaker. After that we went to workshops. Then we had the speech contest. I lost in the speech contest. Then later that night we had a dance. The theme was Halloween night. I had a lot of fun. On Sunday we went to church. Then we went to CiCi’ s pizza. We ate a lot of food. Then we went home."

My Trip to Fort Jackson, By Kelly Doyle

"I went to Fort Jackson for the whole weekend. When I got there it was before dinner time. So we had time to get unpacked and get settled in. Then we got to know each other. Then it was time for dinner. Then we got ready for the opening ceremonies. Then after that we hung out until it was time to go to bed. The next day we got up, ate breakfast got ready for our events. My event was the soft ball throw for the track and field. I got third place. After we had our lunches there we went to Olympic town. That was my favorite thing to do at Fort Jackson. I bought 3 things there. A bag, 1 cup, and a shirt. You can play games, get free sodas ( which I did of course), eat and make arts and crafts and sometimes they play bingo. To me that is fun to do. And that is why I went to Fort Jackson. Then that night we went to the dance. Usually I’m the main one dancing. But not this time. I was too tired. But I always drink sodas at any dance I go to. The only things I didn’t like about Fort Jackson is: getting up at 6:00 a.m., the shower, I couldn’t go to the pancake breakfast, I couldn’t take my purse to the track and field, and they ran out of sodas at Olympic town. And they also tell you what to do. But other than that I had a great time."

My Special Olympics Track and Field Day

"Thanks to Terra’s mom I got a chance to be on the Track and Field team. She is also the track and field is near the USC College. We had to order our Special Olympics track and field uniforms. Then later we had to walk around the whole track. It was really hot there. It was so hot that I got sunburned on my shoulders and my neck. Then we waited for our events to start. I watched Terra do the shot put throw. Then it was my turn to do my event. I did the softball throw. I got first place in my event. But I knew I was going to get first place before I got the ribbon. Because I am good at throwing the ball really far. And that’s how I know I was getting first place. I’m going to Fort Jackson May 7-9. If you would like to see me do the softball throw come on May 8. I can’t wait until I go to Fort Jackson. It will be a lot of fun. I will tell you readers all about Fort Jackson in the next newsletter.

In the future I would like to do the 50-meter dash for track and field. I would love to roller skate for Special Olympics. That is my favorite sport. It’s also my passion. Well, next to writing that is."
