Our Seat at the Table – A Parent Leadership Training

Make an impact as an EQUAL member of any team or group. Learn how to use your voice and journey as a parent to make a difference and advocate for children. Our two-session, interactive, evidence-based curriculum is for anyone who is currently serving, or wants to serve, on a decision-making group (parents, students, educators, administrators, and community members). Participants will:
- Build an understanding about decision-making groups
- Learn about the principles that guide shared decision-making and the processes groups use
- Gain strategies to help you confidently and actively participate in a decision-making group
- To increase the ability of families to advocate for the needs of children and youth with special health care needs, and to encourage more families to take on leadership roles.

Support Parent Training

This workshop provides four hours of evidence-based training to give a parent of a child with special health care needs the skills to be able to support another parent effectively. The goal of the Support Parent Program is to help educate, inspire and empower parents and their children to live rich, fulfilling lives in spite of many challenges. As a representative of Family Connection, a Support Parent provides emotional support and information to families of individuals with disabilities or other special needs. Support Parents connect with other families by telephone or by email, and provide a safe listening environment that can be a wealth of information to other families. Attendees who complete the training will receive a certificate as well as additional opportunities for skill development and volunteer time during their year commitment with Family Connection.

What is PBIS & What Should It Look Like in Schools?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a term heard in schools and one referred to in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). PBIS can be used schoolwide as a way to support a student with behavioral difficulties. In this session, participants will gain valuable knowledge full implementation in schools and for individual students. By the conclusion of this training participants will:
- Understand the data, practices, and systems in a three-tiered PBIS schoolwide framework to create a safe, predictable, and positive school climate for all students.
- Understand the process for determining positive behavior interventions and supports for students with disabilities experiencing social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges.
- Understand the role of family engagement and the use of positive behavior interventions and supports.
