Protect yourself from cervical cancer
January is Cervical Cancer
Awareness Month
Cervical cancer happens when cancer cells grow on the cervix. The cervix is an organ that connects the uterus to the vagina. Cervical cancer slowly gets worse over time. It can lead to illness and even death if not treated properly. Thanks to tests that check for cervical cancer and knowledge of ways to prevent it, the number of people who get and become sick from cervical cancer is lower than it used to be.
To protect yourself from cervical cancer, it is important that you are tested for the disease. If you have a cervix, a powerful testing tool is the Pap test, also called a Pap smear. The Pap smear is a medical exam you’d do at a doctor’s office. During the Pap smear, the doctor uses a swab to take cells from the surface of the cervix. The cells are examined by a doctor under a microscope. This exam can detect cancer in its very early stages. When cancer is found early, you can get quick treatment for a better recovery and a healthy outcome. Speak with your healthcare provider to schedule your Pap smear to get tested.
A very helpful list to help you get the care you need can be found at CMS, Getting the Care you Need for People with Disabilities.
It is important for people with disabilities to get tested and learn how to protect themselves from cervical cancer:
- 9% of people with disabilities have had cancer, while just 5.3% of nondisabled people have had cancer.
- Members of the disability community are 3 times more likely to be denied healthcare than nondisabled people.
Protecting yourself, your family, and our community will take some self & family advocacy. Below are some ways to get started when making your healthcare appointment:
- When calling to schedule your appointment, be specific about what you want, including any tests you want done.
- Tell the scheduler that you are a person with a disability. Be sure to request the accommodations you will need during your appointment.
- Ask about what to expect during the appointment. Knowing what to expect will help both you and your doctor prepare.
In addition to screening, there are 3 different vaccines available that can prevent cervical cancer. The vaccines are named Gardasil, Gardasil 9, and Cervarix. These vaccines are recommended for all children, boys and girls, ages 11 and older. Protect your child from cervical cancer, and talk with your child’s doctor about this powerful tool to prevent it.
You can take action! Protect yourself and your community from the risk of cervical cancer by getting tested and getting vaccines to prevent it!

January Advocacy: Setting Goals for the New Year
This January, our focus is on goal setting, establishing routines for the new year, and resources for receiving an Autism diagnosis. Our Public Policy resources include the 2023 US House legislative calendar and an opportunity for constituents to contact newly elected Congressional Members.
Did you know: A New Year’s resolution, or goal, should be a task or habit that an individual is interested in and can reasonably achieve. A smaller goal is easier to accomplish and can be more realistic to keep up over time. Celebrate all wins!

Your Guide to Power-Assist Attachments
NEW ISSUE
2022 Person of the Year: David Ortiz
Recently reelected Colorado state Rep. David Ortiz proved himself a dedicated public servant in his first term by sponsoring or co-sponsoring an astounding 40 bills, several of which aim to improve the lives of people with disabilities. One of his biggest achievements, a Right to Repair law, could eventually change the face of wheelchair repair across the nation.
PRODUCTS
Gear Guide: Power-Assist Devices
Manual wheelchair users now have a variety of options for adding power. In our latest Gear Guide, we catalog all the manual wheelchair power-assist attachments currently available in the U.S. — from rear-wheel units to handcycle-style attachments with an extra boost, to power-assist wheels with advanced features, to a tank tread platform that will let you traverse soft sand with ease.
PRO TIP
Self-Defense for Wheelchair Users
Popular portrayals of self-defense often focus on martial arts-style moves. We get pro tips from wheelchair-using self-defense experts who argue that situational awareness, confidence, and control of breathing and voice are just as important as confrontational techniques, if not more so. And if things do get unavoidably physical? Make sure you fight dirty.

Transportation Services
Brittany provided an overview of travel training, including trip planning, one-on-one travel training, and group travel training. The presentation also covered the transportation programs offered by the COMET such as the Pick Up Program (PUP), Volunteer Transportation Reimbursement Program (VTrip), Vanpool, the COMET on the GO, and others. You can learn more about these programs by visiting the COMET's website.
David discussed the importance of taking an individualized approach to transportation. He also emphasized building partnerships with local transit agencies. If your regional agency is not responsive, look at it as an opportunity to advocate for changes such as establishing an advisory committee to address accessibility.
Are you interested in learning more about travel training opportunities or advocating for changes to the transportation services in your area? Contact your nearest transit agency to get the conversation started today!
