Sesame Street muppets gathered around new wheelchair bound muppet Ameera image

Opinion: Why Ameera is a Muppet with a wheelchair

that doesn’t fit

Does this representation do harm by being inaccurate, or does it help highlight the problem of a lack of resources for people with disabilities?

This article discusses the new addition to the Muppet cast on Sesame Street. The Muppet character is a girl in a wheelchair as PBS is trying to show inclusivity. It talks about the conversation that UNICEF and PBS had when discussing how the wheelchair build does not match that of one made for someone with a spinal cord injury. PBS admits that they made the wheelchair incorrectly to show the lack of access to equipment based on the needs of someone's disability in the community.

IRS Increases Limit for ABLE Accounts

People with disabilities can save more money without jeopardizing eligibility for government benefits thanks to a change in tax rules for the new year. ABLE accounts are offered through programs in 47 states, many of which are open to individuals nationwide if they have a disability that onset before age 26. Starting in 2026, that age limit will rise to 46 under a recently passed law. As of September, there were more than 131,000 ABLE accounts open with $1.133 billion in assets, according to ISS Market Intelligence.
