Historic Policy Victory on the Horizon for

Power Wheelchair Users

How We Can Make Proposed

Seat Elevation Policy Reform a Reality

We are on the brink of a first-time expansion of coverage by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to include power seat elevation equipment on certain power wheelchairs. The proposed decision released last week is a huge milestone—but we are not done yet.

Thank you to all of you who have helped us get to this point after so many years of advocating on this critical issue. Let’s make this proposed decision final!

We need your voice to help secure Medicare coverage for critical wheelchair technology. CMS wants to hear from you—here’s how you can help.

Submit a Comment to CMS

Are you a wheelchair user?

Medicare wants to hear from YOU!

Take action by March 17, 2023.

We need to show Medicare that wheelchair users and people with disabilities strongly support this coverage and urge Medicare to go even further to ensure that all those who need access to these systems can get it. As you know, these systems are vital for wheelchair users to be able to:

  • Safely transfer from a wheelchair to another surface, particularly if it is not level with your chair
  • Increase your reach to access higher surfaces across the home
  • Prevent and reduce stress injuries from repetitive transfers and reaching
  • Function independently at home as much as possible
  • Describe that seat elevation is needed for functional reach in your home

CMS is currently accepting public comments through Friday, March 17 before they finalize their decision on coverage for power seat elevation systems. Please share your story and let Medicare know how you could or do benefit from these technologies. Submit your comment here.

Take the Fight to Social Media

Consider spreading the word about the ITEM Coalition’s great resource on this issue with language like: Let’s #Rise4Access! Medicare needs to hear from you to finalize coverage for seat elevation systems in power wheelchairs. How does seat elevation help you live your daily life? #ShareYourStory and tell Medicare to cover these systems. Visit rise4access.org for more information.

It's Eating Disorder Awareness Week!

ABLE SC National Eating Disorders Week February 27 to March 5 2023 banner ad

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week
is recognized
February 27 through March 5

An eating disorder is a serious mental and physical illness that affects your relationship with food, exercise, and body image. Eating disorders impact approximately 30 million people in the United States. The impact is felt by people regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, disability status, religion, sex, age, etc.

There are unique stressors within the disability community that can cause the development of an eating disorder. There are groups within our community that are unfairly harmed by eating disorders.

Why are there unique stressors for people with disabilities?

  • Ableism – prejudice, oppression, and exclusion faced by people with disabilities.
  • The media in the U.S celebrates similar, tall, and slender bodies. The many different shapes, sizes, and abilities of bodies found in the disability community are rarely celebrated.
  • There are barriers to finding support and treatment for eating disorders.
  • Medical providers encourage diet and weight loss without considering if their patient may have an eating disorder
  • Medical providers overlook signs of an eating disorder if they are masked by symptoms of your disability. Symptoms of a disability that are also symptoms of an eating disorder can be weight loss or muscle atrophy
  • Physical access to treatment may not be available
  • Treatment plans can interfere with activities of daily living
  • The cost of treatment and support is challenging
  • Eating disorder specialists don’t always have training in working with people with other disabilities

Recovery from and eating disorder is possible and there is hope! If think you may need help with an eating disorder, take this simple screening tool or call the NEDA helpline. Also, explore free, and low cost supports available.

RELATIONSHIPS

After a divorce, Sylvia Longmire entered the dating scene as a wheelchair user for the first time. “The first challenge is getting past … let’s call them ‘unfortunate’ comments and questions,” she writes. “One man asked me if I could pull him in a wagon behind my chair.” Read how, despite the awkward and sometimes ugly interactions, Longmire has managed to enjoy herself and meet some good people along the way.

PRODUCTS

Gloves for Life’s made-to-measure gloves are designed for wheelchair users with limited hand dexterity. Mike Franz, a quad who doesn’t normally use gloves, tried them out and found they significantly improved his pushing efficiency. He even discovered he could use them to hold utensils.

Writer and performer Ryan J. Haddad makes his off-Broadway playwriting debut with the hilarious and audacious DARK DISABLED STORIES at The Public Theater, beginning February 28. His autobiographical play is a series of vignettes about the strangers he encounters while navigating a city not built for his walker and cerebral palsy. Directed by Jordan Fein, DARK DISABLED STORIES will offer open captions, audio descriptions and ASL at every performance.

PARENTING

Seth McBride spent months searching for an accessible day care for his 16-month-old daughter and was ultimately thwarted by … a drainpipe. Read this infuriating look at how trying to access America’s child care system as a parent with a disability can be painful, exhausting and often defeating.

Concussion Awareness Now Coalition

Concussion Awareness Now logo

Brain Injury Association of South Carolina Joins ‘Concussion Awareness Now’ to Change How Society Views Concussions

When it comes to something as serious as concussion — an injury that is estimated to occur every 15 seconds in the United States — the faster you receive a diagnosis, the faster you can get back to the things you love. And yet, over half of people who suspect they have a concussion never get it checked.

Concussions don’t discriminate and can happen to anyone, anytime. So, what can you do if you think you have a concussion? It comes down to detection — the best way to ensure that the brain injury is properly treated and recovered, or the best way to get a good night’s rest knowing that a concussion didn’t result from the hit to the head you sustained that day.

BIASC is proud to join forces with Concussion Awareness Now, a coalition of organizations dedicated to changing how society views concussion. It’s not tough to tough it out. And if you hit your head, you should get it checked.

The Concussion Awareness Now coalition includes nearly 20 partners, including organizations that determine guidelines for concussion care, advocate for patients and work with communities who are vulnerable to concussions. Together, we have decades of experience in the brain injury community and the resources to create a rallying cry for awareness and, ultimately, action. Our goal is to help reshape how society views concussion so that people get the care they need, when they need it most.

BIASC is Celebrating Our 25th Anniversary!

Brain Injury Association of South Carolina 25th Anniversary logo

BIASC is Celebrating 25 Years
of Providing Resources & Support
to the South Carolina Brain Injury Community

We are excited to inform you that BIASC is celebrating 25 years of providing resources and support to the South Carolina Brain Injury Community. When we were founded in 1998 by caregivers as a way to provide much needed resources about brain injury we never would have predicted that we would be here today!

We are a thriving organization that provides countless resources, trainings, referrals, and supports for survivors of brain injury, their caregivers, and professionals who work with brain injury survivors.

25 is our year!

We have doubled in staff, are receiving multiple grants from state-level sources, national-sources, and money from the legislature, and we are able to dedicate time to address some of the intersections of brain injury that we didn't have the capacity to address until now:

  • The intersection of Brain Injury and Domestic Violence/Interpersonal Violence
  • The intersection of Brain Injury and Veteran Outreach
  • The intersection of Brain Injury and Opioid Misuse and/or Overdose

All year we will be making it a point to celebrate with you at as many events as we can! Our success is due to a great and supportive community of individuals who have a vested interest in brain injury education and advocacy. We are thrilled to share in this celebration with you!

Thank you for your continued support!
