Check Out Our New Title!

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success book cover
Mindset:
The New Psychology of Success
by
Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.
2016

The updated edition of the book that has changed millions of lives with its insights into the growth mindset.

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

Happy National Assistive Technology Awareness Day!

Administration for Community Living News & Events logo

Earlier this month, the United States Senate unanimously adopted a resolution declaring today National Assistive Technology Awareness Day. The resolution noted that "assistive technology devices and services are not luxury items but necessities for millions of people with disabilities and older adults, without which they would be unable to live in their communities, access education, and obtain, retain, and advance gainful, competitive integrated employment,"

ACL is proud to fund Assistive Technology Act programs in every state and territory that help older adults and people with disabilities discover, try, reutilize, and finance assistive technology. In FY18:

  • Over 72,000 individuals participated in assistive technology device demonstrations to find the right device for their community living needs.

  • Nearly 50,000 AT devices were provided on short-term loan to individuals with disabilities, service providers, and agencies.

  • More than 70,000 AT devices were reutilized, allowing consumers to save more than $28 million by obtaining a lightly used or refurbished AT device.

  • 96% percent of consumers who received financing loans from an AT program said they would not be able to purchase or obtain the AT without this financing.

The SC Youth Leadership Forum is a great place to meet other youth with disabilities and network with change-makers from across the state! Did you know you're part of a larger community? Many young adults leave the YLF feeling more connected to their peers making overcoming challenges easier. Our 2019 keynote speakers include lawmakers, disability rights advocates, and previous YLF attendees!

At the End of the Day, It's Still Summer Break!

While you're at YLF you'll learn a lot about leadership, advocacy, and empowering others, but when the sessions end there's still LOTS of fun! Some of our favorite memories are the conga line of 2016, the ice cream social that was a little too much fun, and the 2018 dance competition!

Build on Your Professional Development and Independent Living Skills!

The Youth Leadership Forum is a professional leadership training; add your experience as a delegate to college applications and job resumes! You may not realize how many independent living skills you already have until you're given the chance to use them. YLF delegates get the full college experience by staying in the dorms, eating in the cafeteria, and having sessions in actual college classrooms. The YLF pro-staff and peer staff are here to support delegates every step of the way. What are you waiting for? Apply today!

Upstate Run & Roll 5K

Upstate Run and Roll 5K banner

This year the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina (BIASC) has rebranded our annual Run for Thought as the Upstate Run and Roll 5K to offer more inclusivity and expand our outreach in the Upstate. The Run for Thought began 11 years ago, and we are incredibly proud of the longevity of this event and look forward to many more years running for such a great cause!

This year we extend gratitude to Prisma Health for their continued support as an Innovative Sponsor of the event, as well as Achilles International - Greenville for their Advocate Sponsorship in honor of Sarah Belfore, as well as Foster Law Firm as a Supporting Sponsor.

Proceeds from the event will ensure that BIASC continues to provide resources and support to individuals with brain injury and their families, educate the public on the risks and impact of brain injuries, and advocacy for legislation to improve community-based services in the state of South Carolina.

This event is our primary fundraising event in the Upstate and I encourage you all to come and support this great cause. Brain injury is incredibly prevalent and whether we realize it or not, we have all been affected by this. Come out to learn more, show support for a loved one, and have a good time in Downtown Greenville on Saturday, March 30th!
