Xbox Launches Adaptive Gaming Controller

by Aaron Broveman
June 18, 2018

Microsoft Xbox is the first major console brand of this generation to have its own proprietary adaptive controller for gamers with limited upper body function.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller has two huge buttons and the ability to plug in up to 19 adapted  buttons or directional peripherals so gamers can customize a setup that best suits their function and the game they’re playing. It also has mapping options that can configure button position to anywhere a player needs and co-piloting capabilities that allow two controllers to play as one.

“If one person only has function on their left hand, they can control the left side of the controller and another person can use all the buttons on the right side. It’s called co-piloting because you can control the character, but if you need assistance, your co-pilot can take control immediately,” says Mike Luckett, a C6 quad and gamer. He tested and provided feedback on the XAC thanks to his involvement with Warfighter Engaged, a nonprofit that provides free adapted and custom-made controllers and peripherals to injured veterans and others with disabilities.

Project Search Grants Available

**Project SEARCH Grants Now Available**

The Arc of the Midlands is announcing the availability of training and technical assistance resources to implement Project SEARCH youth transition and employment sites in South Carolina. This initiative is sponsored by the South Carolina Developmental Disabilities Council.  The training and technical assistance initiative includes partial licensing fees up to $8,000 each to implement up to four (4) new Project SEARCH sites for the 2019-20 school year.

Project SEARCH is a business led internship program for transition-age students and working-age adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) that enables people to gain real world experience, learn competitive job skills, and become employed in the community. The development of a Project SEARCH site is a community collaboration between local education agencies (generally serve as lead applicant for the high school transition model), South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department, and a Host Business. DDSN qualified community employment service providers/vendors supporting individuals with I/DD generally serve as the lead applicant for the adult model.

Please see the attached documents for the official application, details and timeline, as well as additional background information on Project SEARCH.

Applications are due September 7, 2018 by 5 p.m.

We Want to Hear From You!

We Need Your Help!

We are partnering with the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital to collect interviews from Patient Care Assistants and consumers with a PCA.

We are interested in learning more about what it is like to help people with their basic daily activities in their homes and what it is like to get help with doing daily activities if you have a health problem or disability. As a small thank you for your time you'll be compensated with a $50 gift card.

Are You a PCA?
If you are paid to help people with their daily activities – such as getting out of bed, getting ready for the day, going to bed at night, preparing and eating meals, getting around their home, or taking medicines – because of health problems or disability, we would like to hear from you!

To volunteer for this research project, you must:
  • Help people in their homes with doing basic daily activities
  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Speak English and live in the United States

Do You Pay a PCA?
If you pay for someone to help you do your daily activities – such as getting out of bed, getting ready for the day, going to bed at night, preparing and eating meals, getting around your home, or taking medicines – we would like to hear from you too!

To volunteer for this research project, you must:
  • Pay for people to help you with doing basic daily activities
  • Need that help because of a health problem or disability that has lasted at least a year
  • Be between 45-70 years old
  • Speak English and live in the United States

These interviews are being conducted for a research project at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital. This one-time interview will take 1-2 hours to complete and will be recorded. Upon completion of the project, the recording will be destroyed. Your identity will be kept confidential.

If you are interested please contact Naomi Gallopyn at 617-643-5172. If she is unable to answer your call please leave your name, phone number, and email so that she can reach you.

Thank you!
