Remembering Frances Campbell


Frances Campbell, PhD, a former longtime senior scientist at FPG and an internationally recognized expert on the transformative impact of early childhood education, died August 25, 2024, at 91. Campbell began her career as a clinical psychologist and came to FPG to help lead and evaluate the Abecedarian Project. She remained at FPG until her retirement at 88 and was an essential part of FPG’s history and growth, and her body of work is an enduring example of the influence FPG has on the lives of the children and families in North Carolina and beyond.

New Research from FPG

New project focuses on supporting early autism interventions for toddlers


Committed to delivering early intervention services in a family-centered way, Jessica Amsbary is leading a new project, “Empowering Culturally Diverse Families in Early Autism Intervention for Toddlers.” Amsbary, a TA specialist at FPG, is collaborating with Jessica Kinard at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities.

Project aims to improve kindergarten experiences for every child



Kindergarten is a foundational year in a child’s education, providing a bridge from early childhood experiences to the early grades. While kindergarten is an important time for young children to learn and practice a variety of skills, there has been little focus on this stage of education. To address this, a team from FPG launched a one-year project called Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge.

state-wide resources on math, literacy and social emotional learning for North Carolina pre-K providers, leaders from FPG, in partnership with the NC DCDEE, recently co-hosted “Embracing Joy in pre-K Literacy, Math, and Socioemotional Learning NC pre-K Summit."

2024 McKinney Scholars


This year, the McKinney Scholars Program welcomed two stellar students―Zairen Jackson and Sydney Shepherd. The program, which honors Marvin H. McKinney, PhD, a former postdoctoral fellow at FPG, and longtime educator and collaborator, was established to offer hands-on research experience in child development to undergraduate students from North HBCUs.

2024 implementation interns


FPG recently wrapped up its fifth annual Summer Graduate Internship Program in Implementation Practice, a paid opportunity for masters' and doctoral students. The program, which is designed to create a challenging and meaningful professional experience, exposes interns to implementation practice and research across a variety of fields and practice settings.


This year's interns, Alden Parker and Tori Wierzchowski, took time to reflect on the internship program and answer a few questions.
