Folding a More Affordable Wheelchair

A new wheelchair prototype from wheelchair user and assistive technology pioneer Rory Cooper takes its inspiration from Japanese kirigami paper cutting and folding. The unique manufacturing method allows Cooper’s team to produce a custom wheelchair in four hours or less using a single sheet of aluminum. They hope the technique can play a role in making manual wheelchairs more affordable.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced a $50 million fine against American Airlines — the largest fine DOT has ever assessed for disability violations. It also acknowledged the problem isn’t limited to American Airlines, and that the department has active investigations into violations by other airlines. Donavan Bryant is a wheelchair user serving a 12-year prison sentence in New York. He gives us a look at what life is like in prison — from getting mobility equipment, to showering, managing health issues, dealing with other inmates and more. “Being in a situation like prison,” he writes, “you’re either going to have some serious personal growth or you are going to go mad, simple as that.”
