The 2014 UN-Gala will be at the same location as last year: The South Carolina State Museum. (Yes, we were surprised they wanted us to come back too!) The event will start at 7PM, so don’t be late!

As usual there will be plenty of food, music, fun & games, silent and live auctions and — of course — an open bar with adult beverages.

We have made some major changes this year for event check-in and for auction purchase check-out. We think you will be pleased how much more quickly and smoothly both of these processes will move in 2014.

So start planning your costume now. The possibilities are endless. Just look deep into your closet for your best (i.e. most outlandish beach/Caribbean wear) and puttogether your outfit. Or  just come as you are. We won’t care. And you’ll have fun no matter how you are dressed!

Music for Dog-aritaville will be provided by Tsunami Wave Riders.

Tickets are $60 per person. However, advance purchase tickets are available through March 8th are only $40 per person.

Special pricing is available for PAALS volunteers. If you are a volunteer and haven’t received your special invitation, let us know and we’ll get you the information.

Kiss the Cow Fundraiser for PAALS

Kiss the Cow Fundraiser for Becky Sullivan

Lexington County Sheriff, James Metts, and Director of Public Safety, David Kerr, are sponsoring a “Kiss the Cow” fundraiser for Client in Waiting Becky Sullivan. Whoever gets the FEWEST “votes” will “Kiss the Cow” on October 12 at the South Carolina State Fair.

Becky is married to Jim Sullivan, a long standing Lexington County firefighter. While she was able, Becky was also a Lexington County volunteer firefighter herself.

Each vote is one dollar and you may cast as many votes as you want as many times as you wish.

All proceeds from this fundraisier will go to the benefit of PAALS. The first $5,000 raised will be designated for Becky’s Team Training tuition. Any donations received above this amount will go into PAALS general fund to further our mission.

PAALS Poochapalooza

Poochapalooza

The 2013 version of Poochapalooza will be very different from the past two years – and we hope a lot more fun for families and their pets – and at a different time and location. It will definitely a be more family and pet friendly atmosphere and setting.

This year we are changing up Poochapalooza to make it the “funnest”  yet! NO walk or run, just a fun, family friendly, dog themed festival. Bring your whole family including your leashed doggy. Dogs are not required. :-)

Poochapalooza 2013 will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Saluda Shoals park.

Some of the fun events at this year’s Poochapalooza will be:

* Doggy Fashion Show
* Face Painting
* Palm & Paw Reading

* Pawdicures (nail trimming)
* Temporary Tattoos
* Photo Booth

* Drinks & Snacks
* Raffles & Games
* Doggy Kissing Booth

And meet adorable, adoptable dogs from both the Heartworm Project and Animal Protective League

Registration will be open soon so keep checking regularly. Registration prices will start at $10 per person. Everything at Poochapalooza (e.g. raffles, drinks, snacks, Paw Reading) can only be paid for with “Pooch Tickets”. So keep that in mind as you chose your registration package. Additional “Pooch Tickets” can be purchased at the event for $1.00 each. Children under 10 will be admitted free.

Doggone Days of Summer Camp

Doggone Days of Summer Camp

Ever wonder how PAALS teaches dogs to turn on lights for people who use wheelchairs? Learn the basics of service dog training, how to help people in the community, and work side by side with other youth and youth with disabilities, all while pairing up to train a service dog candidate.

Ages 11-14 (ages 11-19 youth with disabilities).

Early Bird Registration $225 – April 2, 2013 through May 15, 2013.

A deposit of $150 is required to hold a space. Early bird must be paid in full by May 15, 2013, to take advantage of discount.

The two camp sessions are June 17-21, 2013 and June 24-28, 2013. A third week will be added (July 8 – 12) if the first two weeks fill up.

Veterans getting a little help from some PAALS

Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services has launched its Veterans’ Important PAALS program and is seeking interested local active-duty military members and veterans who need assistance dogs.

The program offers qualified rescue dogs that are trained by PAALS members for service members and veterans who need a safe, loyal and well-behaved companion.

Two dogs are available for immediate placement and more will become available on a regular basis. The animals are provided free.

PAALS routinely places service dogs with soldiers and veterans who have combat-related injuries, but some of the dogs in training do not meet all of the requirements to be full-fledged service dogs. The V.I.P. program was created to place these dogs with veterans.

PAALS does not receive government funding and relies on volunteers and private donations. Each service dog costs between $22,000 and $29,000 to train, based on specific client needs.

The Wild West Party with PAALS

PAALS trains animals to assist people with varying abilities to live more independent and enriched lives by providing them with assistance dogs. Some of our specially trained canines are taught to turn lights on and off, tug open doors, pick up dropped items and alert for help to assist individuals in wheelchairs. Other dogs go on to assist children with autism and soldiers with PTSD to accomplish therapeutic and real life goals. These dogs are primarily placed in and around South Carolina.

During the two-year training period required to produce a service dog from a puppy, PAALS also provides programs for underserved youth, seniors, and individuals with special needs. Some examples of programs that use puppies in training include an integrated camp for youth and special needs individuals for assistance dog training, outreach visits to retirement homes, and educational programs for youth.

PAALS Tug to the Finish Fundraising

Help PAALS achieve our fundraising goal for 2012 by contributing to the Tug to the Finish to raise $25,000 before the end of the year. In addition to achieving our goal for the third straight year, this is also the amount it will take to train one of our new puppies for the two years required for a service dog.

PAALS trains animals to assist people with varying abilities to live more independent and enriched lives by providing them with assistance dogs. Some of our specially trained canines are taught to turn lights on and off, tug open doors, pick up dropped items and alert for help to assist individuals in wheelchairs. Other dogs go on to assist children with autism and soldiers with PTSD to accomplish therapeutic and real life goals. These dogs are primarily placed in and around South Carolina.

Special Prizes

For each $5,000 raised toward our overall goal, we will have a drawing for a dinner for two at Stonefire American Grill in Columbia. Everyone who donates toward each $5,000 will be automatically entered in the drawing. When the $25,000 goal is reached, everyone who contributes will be entered in a drawing for dinner for two at Dianne’s on Devine.

All donations received from now through December 31, 2012, will be counted toward our Tug to the Finish and participate in the prize drawings including PAALS Pack and Rob’s Best Friend Fund.

** If the drawing winner does not live in the Columbia area, they will receive a gift certificate of equal value to a restaurant of their choice in the city where they live.

BRING YOUR HUMAN ON A "DOG WALK" STYLE POKER RUN. You and your human will walk a pre-set course, stopping at sponsor checkpoints to receive a playing card. At the end of the walk, each player selects their top cards and the best poker paws win prizes you'll wag your tail over!

Dog Show

COSTUME YOUR POOCH AND JOIN THE SHOW. The  pet parade will give you a chance to show everyone how special you and your human are.

Two of a Kind - This class is to showcase dog/owner matching or complimentary costumes. The dog and human with the most creative costume combo will take the day.

Full House - This class is for families who have more than one dog. Entries will be judged as a group, with the most interesting collection of dog costumes being awarded the crown.

The Joker - This class will showcase costumes that incorporate a trick or talent. We will recognize the top three in this class, but all entrants will receive a goody bag to reward them for their effort.

Queen of Hearts - This class is for the girls. We will select the Diva for the day.

King of Spades - This class is for the boys. We will select the Big Dog for the day.
