Family Connection's 'Hopes & Dreams' 2013 Conference

- a conference in support of

the Child with Special Healthcare Needs.

 This conference is for parents of children with special needs and professionals who care for them. It is an opportunity to explore the issues and challenges which families face in caring for children with developmental disabilities, chronic illnesses and long-term health needs.

There are 64 workshops covering a wide range of issues including behavior, care & treatment, education, family care, finances and more.

CEU credits will be available for Nurses, Social Workers, Speech Pathologists, Teachers, Early Interventionists, and Child Care Workers.

Objectives

After the conference, participants should be able to:

• Better meet the challenges of caring for a child with special needs from infancy to adulthood.

• Address issues such as education, transitions, child’s self-esteem, family wellness and recreation.

• Work toward providing and receiving family-centered services.

• Identify Family Connection of South Carolina, Inc. and other agencies/organizations as resources for families and professionals caring for children with special needs.

Purpose

The purpose of this conference is to increase the sensitivity and expand the knowledge of parents and professionals about disabilities and special needs, family support and opportunities available to families who have children of all ages with special needs.

Target Audience

The target audiences of this conference are parents and caregivers of children with special needs, community agency/organization personnel, early interventionists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, nurses, physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, teachers and other interested health care and service providers.

Dates

The conference is held on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, 2013.

Each day has a different agenda.

Time

The conference begins each day at 8:00 am.  Registration will be open and coffee and exhibitors will be available.

The presentations will begin with an official Welcome at 8:45 am. 

The first Workshop of the day begins at 9:00 am.

The Young Child with Special Needs Conference

Complexity in managing young children with special needs requires multidisciplinary approaches, along with family-focused interventions and support. Coordination of these interventions in multiple settings adds even greater challenge for health care providers, special educators, pre-school teachers, therapists, speech pathologists and parents. As professionals working with young children with developmental disabilities, we are charged with enhancing our knowledge of medical and behavioral conditions, refining our assessment skills and expanding our tools and strategies for managing these special needs children.

Purpose of the Conference

At the Pass It On Center, we have experienced a significant increase in requests for technical assistance and training from Centers for Independent Living (CILs) throughout the US and territories. We are organizing a national conference to provide more focused technical assistance and promote closer collaboration with AT Reuse Programs and CILs in the area of Reuse. This conference is designed to showcase innovative strategies that AT Reuse programs have found to work within and in collaboration with Centers for Independent Living (CILs). Discussion will center on identifying new skills and specific needs of reuse programs within CILs that need to be addressed. A registration fee of $200.00 will be charged per each conference attendee. There is an additional charge of $45.00 if you register for the optional pre-conference tour of FODAC. Your registration fee covers the cost of the conference plus breakfast, lunch, continuous breaks/snacks, Internet and parking on both conference days.

About Our Presenters

Diagnosed with "Atypical Development with strong autistic tendencies", Dr. Stephen Shore was viewed as "too sick" to be treated on an outpatient basis and recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four, and with much help from his parents, teachers and others, Stephen completed his doctoral dissertation at Boston University focused on matching best practice to the needs of people on the autism spectrum. Recently, Dr. Shore has accepted a professorship at Adelphi University teaching courses in special education and autism.

In addition to working with children and talking about life on the autism spectrum, Stephen presents and consults internationally on adult issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure as discussed in his books, "Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome", "Ask and Tell: Self-Advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum" and the critcally acclaimed "Understanding Autism for Dummies".

President emeritus of the Asperger's Association of New England, Dr. Shore serves on the Interagency Coordinating Committee, for the Board of Directors for Autism Society of America, Unlocking Autism, MAAP, the College Internship Program and USAAA.

Larry Bissonnette is an advocate and artist who lives in Milton, Vermont and has had his work exhibited regularly both locally and nationally. Larry is one of the featured artists of the GRACE (Grass Roots Art and Community Effort) project based in Hardwick, Vermont. In 1991, Larry learned to communicate through typing and began combining words with his art to express his thoughts and ideas. Over the past 15 years, he has been a featured presenter at many educational conferences and has written and spoken on the topics of autism, communication and art.

Tracy Thresher is an advocate for people with disabilities. He lives and works in Vermont. Tracy began typing to communicate in 1990 and was one of the first individuals with autism at Washington County Mental Health Services (a community-based service provider) to be introduced to it. He has presented at local, statewide, and national workshops and conferences. He has consulted with local schools, is a member of the Vermont Statewide Standing Committee and has worked for the Green Mountain Self-Advocates in Montpelier, Vermont. In Vermont, he mentors teenagers and adults. Most recently, Tracy has consulted at Syracuse University as a lead trainer.

Yesterday I exhibited the CDR Library services at the South Carolina Chapter of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities annual conference. This year's theme was entitled, "Finding Ways to Enhance Quality." Overall, it was another great event at the Laurelhurst Conference Center, and I really enjoyed meeting and talking to over 100+ people that stopped by the booth to hear about the library and/or MedlinePlus.gov.

The award was presented to Mrs. Cutler at a conference hosted by Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services in Los Angeles.

Some of the world’s most renowned autism and Asperger experts will present new interventions and new research in both education and medicine.
