Columbia Parkinson Support Group - News and Meeting Reminder

Meeting Reminder: Our February 19th meeting is one that you will not want to miss! We will be having two excellent,well-known, and respected doctors from the Georgia Health Sciences University (formally called the Medical College of Georgia -
MCG). We know that you will find this meeting very informative, not only about the DBS procedure and process, but also about Parkinson's disease. (DBS is "Deep Brain Stimulation" - a type of surgical management of Parkinson's disease.)

Topic: "What You Need To Know About The DBS Process" -- From determining who is a DBS candidate - the evaluation process - the surgery/surgeries - and the on-going treatment after surgery.

Russ Bell will be discussing what you need to do to prepare for emergencies and natural disasters (i.e., hurricanes, tornadoes, evacuations). While the topic will be applicable to everyone, there will be focus on special preparation for seniors, those with disabilities, and those who are ill and need special care.

The CDR Library has been featured in the South Carolina Spinal Cord Injurt Association's Summer 2010 newsletter!

"The CDR library is a collaborative effort between the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine Library, Baby Net/South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, the Center for Disability Resources, and the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. Located on the USC School of Medicine campus in Columbia, the library makes books, videos, DVD’s, audiotapes, and brochures on a wide range of disability topics available nationwide."

The SC Adult Sibling Leadership Network

What is the purpose of the Adult Sibling Leadership Network?

Provide opportunities for adult siblings of persons with developmental disabilities, related disabilities, and brain and/or spinal cord injuries to:
· Network with each other;
· Share experiences, ideas, and concerns;
· Gain information about the state’s system of supports and services; and
· Receive training on how to effectively advocate on behalf of their brother or sister with a disability.

Who is the Sibling Network For?

· Adult siblings, 21 years of age or older, of persons with developmental disabilities, related disabilities, and brain and/or spinal cord injuries.
· Anyone else that the individual with a disability considers family in cases where there is no living sibling.

What are the benefits of joining the Adult Sibling Network?

· Monthly webinars/seminars on topics of interest to siblings
· Statewide conference
· Adult Sibling Newsletter
· Adult Sibling Directory
· Support group
· Website with links to other states’ Adult Sibling Networks, other SC agencies and partners serving adults with disabilities, and legislative database.

What are the costs for joining the Adult Sibling Leadership Network?

· There is NO financial cost for joining the network. There may be some registration fees associated with attending a statewide conference.

The SC Adult Sibling Leadership Network is a project of PRO-Parents of SC and is funded through a grant from the SC Developmental Disabilities Council. The grant will provide opportunities for adult siblings of persons with disabilities to network with each other, share information, gain information, and receive training on how to effectively advocate on behalf of their brother or sister. There is no obligation or cost to join the SC Adult Sibling Leadership Network. March 2010 Newsletter

This past month has been quite productive - we had over 100 information requests and even more articles sent out to patrons! We added several new patrons and checked out almost thirty books this month as well. Notable book additions includ The Horse Boy, How it Feels to Live With a Mental Disability, and Anna's Silent World.

January 2010 Newsletter

We had a quieter month thanks to the Christmas holidays, but still added nine new patrons and sent out quite a few articles! We purchased a series of books dealing with disabilities in adolescents and how parents can deal with them (If Your Adolescent Has...) as well as several other exciting titles.

December 2009 Newsletter

This past month has been busy, with over 50 checkouts, several new patrons, and over 100 information requests! This month's newsletter also includes our listing of the top ten checkouts of 2009, among them Autism is a Word and 1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

November 2009 Newsletter

November was a productive month for the CDR Library: we added several new patrons, sent out well over one hundred articles, and checked out over thirty books to our patrons. In addition, we obtained several new titles, among them Little Bear, Just As I Am, and Autism Frontiers. The newsletter also includes a review of the book Retarded Isn't Stupid, Mom!, a book which highlights the difficulties faced not only by children with disabilities but those that their parents must overcome as well.
