Everyday Technology for Learning Differences:

Use the Tools You Already Have

Thursday, September 19, 2013
3:30 PM Pacific, 6:30 PM Eastern

From computers to smartphones to e-readers, kids today are immersed in technology. This AT Network presentation will demonstrate how to take advantage of familiar technology to compensate for learning challenges, capitalize on learning strengths, and reduce time and effort spent on school work. Through live demonstrations, participants will learn how everyday tech –word processors, Web browsers, consumer electronics, and more – can assist students who struggle with reading, writing, notetaking, math, organization, time management, and attention.
Highlights are:
  • Underutilized features in Microsoft Word and other popular programs
  •  Learning supports built into the Mac and Windows operating systems
  • Apps that turn mobile devices (Apple iDevices, Android) into portable learning assistants
  • Alternative uses for consumer electronics (MP3 player, camera, voice recorder, smartpen)
  • Add-ons, Web resources, and cloud drives to configure an Internet browser as an online study tool.

"A Best Friend for James" Review by Kelly

Kelly’s Article

“A Best Friend for James”, written by Jeannie E. Casey Thomas with Rae Thomas and illustrated by Judy Doudoukjian and James Thomas, is about a boy named James who always wanted a pet cat.  He loves animals.  His first cat he had used to hiss at him and would never let him pet it.  Then his dad brought home a new cat he rescued from his job.  He named that cat Cocoa.  Because he was sweet like cocoa.  Every day when James was at school Cocoa would sleep in James’s chair.  And when he came home from school Cocoa would come up to him and purr at him.   At night Cocoa would sleep in his bed next to him.  James accidently let the cat outside when he went to play.  The cat was missing for a week.  He looked everywhere in the house but Cocoa wasn’t there.  He looked outside.  He looked around for the cat.  Then he found the cat stuck in the vent.  It was a good book.  But I wish it could have been longer story.  It was too short.

Post-Self-Advocacy Summits Webinar

Post-Self-Advocacy Summits

Webinar:

Youth & Self-

Advocacy

Tuesday, September 17 from 4:00-5:00pm EDT (FREE!!!)

In 2011 and 2012, self-advocacy summits were held all over the US. These summits gave state teams the chance to set statewide goals on self-advocacy. Many state teams created goals that talked about getting young people with disabilities involved in self-advocacy activities.  This webinar will assist statewide teams, organizations and individuals in empowering young people with disabilities to become self-advocates.  It may seem hard to get young people involved in self-advocacy, but it's not impossible!

There will be 3 parts to this webinar:

1)      A group of young people with disabilities from the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN) will share some tips and tricks on how to get young people with disabilities involved in statewide self-advocacy activities

2)      Some of the states that included youth self-advocacy as a goal from the Summits will share their progress

3)      All participants on the call will discuss best practices of including young people with disabilities in statewide self-advocacy activities.

For questions on youth and self-advocacy, please contact:
Staci Forrest at staci@nyln.org or 302-545-0607

For questions specifically about this webinar, please contact:
Hillary Spears at hspears@nacdd.org or 202-506-5813
