A research study by Alice Carter and colleagues who are members of the Sensory Processing: Disorder Scientific Work Group suggests that 1 in every 6 children experiences sensory symptoms that may be significant enough to affect aspects of everyday life functions. Sensory needs are found not only in special education classrooms, but in general education classrooms as well.  If a child has a sensory processing disorder, the child may be sensory seeking or exhibit sensory offensiveness.

In this workshop, we will explore a variety of inexpensive and DIY sensory tools including virtual sensory tools for computers and tablets. Resources will be shared. The session is not age or disability specific as sensory needs are often alongside other disabilities and can be present from infancy to adulthood.

Presenter: Elizabeth Moore has worked in SC schools for more than a decade. After earning her B.A. from USC and her MLA from Converse College, she began her career working in a high priority school where the focused use of assistive technology was being initiated.  She then worked as an instructional technology specialist for several years before she began working in a facility where instructional technology and assistive technology are both integrated in the curriculum. Elizabeth works as a Corrective Action Specialist at the Office of Special Services (OSES) at the SC Department of Education (SCDE).  She was previously  an Assistive Technology Specialist at OSES at the SCDE.
