Kevin and Avonte’s Law honors the memory of Kevin Wills and Avonte Oquendo, two boys with Autism who tragically perished after wandering away from supervised settings. The law aims to create safer communities for people with Autism, other developmental disabilities, and forms of dementia by providing grant funding to local agencies.

The Autism Society of America provides training and technical assistance to the sites that receive grant funding through the Kevin & Avonte grant program in collaboration with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability® (NCCJD®).

Connect to Resources: Developed in partnership with Kevin & Avonte’s grant program partners, the Autism Society of America is proud to share this comprehensive overview of wandering. It explores promising practices for implementing communication, technology, and education strategies for wandering prevention, response to wandering, and recovery of individuals who have wandered.

PRODUCTS

LapStacker Carrying Device: Reviewed

The LapStacker secures items on your lap with an easy-to-use strap system. As a manual wheelchair user with limited hand function, Cheryl Angelelli tests the device to see how it performs while traveling, at work and in the grocery store.

ACCESS

Starbucks Improves Accessibility Efforts

A new Starbucks in Washington, D.C.s Union Market District is the first to incorporate its Inclusive Spaces Framework, designed to go beyond ADA compliance in creating spaces where everyone feels welcome. New features like wheelchair-friendly counters, redesigned workspaces and open pathways aim to make stores more accessible for disabled customers and employees alike.

Handle Hard Better

After meeting a newly injured wheelchair user, NM Editor-in-Chief Ian Ruder started to wonder why life with a disability often gets better after some years under your belt. Disability life doesn’t get easier, he says, but we get better at dealing with its hassles. And that’s the key, learning how to “handle hard better” — so you can enjoy all the good stuff and live your life.

PRO TIPS

Solutions for Overactive Bladder

Managing a spastic bladder can be one of the most frustrating parts of living with SCI. Our resident bladder expert, Bob Vogel, talks with wheelchair users to find out what treatment strategies work for them, and we share expert advice and online resources to find solutions that work for you.

Setting Our Own Definitions of Success

In her latest column, Regan Linton argues that many traditional measures of success don’t align with her life as a wheelchair user. “The success of our lives should be in accordance with the values we set, not those that strangers in the outside world manipulate us into thinking are important,” she writes.
