What is Learning? Free Training

What is Learning?
Date: September 11, 2018
Time: 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Cost: Free
Location: SC Assistive Technology Program, 8301 Farrow Road, Columbia, SC, Poplar Building (Directions)

With all of the time we spend talking about teaching and learning, the emphasis is too often on the teaching rather than the learning.  What does it really mean to learn? And how does learning happen in the brain? In this training session we will dig underneath the surface of teaching and learning and explore the most important things educators need to know about learning in the brain and how to create the most effective learning experiences.

Spoiler alert: A teacher or trainer does not take their knowledge and transfer it to the learner.  In this training session, we will discuss what really happens based on sound neuroscience.
  • What is learning?
  • What conditions support or impede learning?
  • What is involved in remembering?
  • What are the different types of memory?
  • Why all this matters for teachers and students.
Following the training, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how learning happens in the brain.
  • Compare procedural and declarative memory and articulate the importance of distinguishing them.
  • Determine the most appropriate strategies depending on the type of memory involved.
  • Formulate further questions for exploration regarding the application of neuroscience to learning and teaching.
Betsy Hill is a neuro-educator and President of BrainWare Learning Company.  She has studied the application of neuroscience to teaching and learning with Dr. Patricia Wolfe and other experts and works with educators, clinicians and corporate trainers on using neuroscience research to address some of the most perplexing problems in education, including closing the gap for historically underperforming students.  She addressed issues of college and career preparedness as a trustee and board chair at Chicago State University.  She holds a Master of Arts degree in Teaching and an MBA from Northwestern University, and teaches strategy at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Back to School Tips from Family Connections

Preparing before School Starts
It's never too early to get ready for a new school year. These tips can help you and your family be ready to learn.

Develop Good Sleep Routines
Getting enough sleep is critical for a child to be successful in school. Set a consistent bedtime for your child and stick with it every night. The optimal amount of sleep for most younger children is 10-12 hours per night and for adolescents (13-18 year of age) is in the range of 8-10 hours per night. Consider starting your child on their school sleep/wake schedule a week or so ahead of time so that time change is not a factor on their first couple of days at school.

See Healthy Sleep Habits: How Many Hours Does Your Child Need? for more information.

Transportation
Make sure your child knows how they will get to and from school, whether it is by car, carpool, bus, bike, or walking. Review safety protocols and any change in route or transportation mode.

After School Care
One of the biggest challenges parents face is finding child care. It is never too early to begin touring child care facilities. The SC Inclusion Collaborative supports families by providing the following:
  • a list of providers for you to contact that may meet your needs
  • information about what to look for regarding health, safety, and quality
  • information about financial assistance options
  • tools you can use to make an informed choice

SCI RESEARCH

Nonsurgical Recovery of Function
“Improved voluntary hand function occurred within a single session in every subject tested.” Um, what? Believe it — nonsurgical recovery of function is a thing now. Though it’s still in the clinical trial phase, transcutaneous stimulation of the spinal cord (where electrodes are placed atop the skin instead of being implanted) is already starting to give motor-complete quads increased independence by improving hand function. We couldn’t be more excited about where this research may lead.

THE MOST FUN YOU CAN HAVE ON THREE WHEELS?

The Icon Explore Mountain Trike
The Icon Explore trike is the closest feeling you can get to riding a two-wheel mountain bike — with an electric motor, mountain bike style steering and an articulating front end that traverses side slopes and lets you lean into turns. This four-minute video gives a close-up look at the trike and features some gorgeous cinematography of one mud-spattered Canadian going bonkers fast through the Rockies.

FILM REVIEW

'Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot'
In a move that’s already generating online backlash, director Gus Van Sant cast the nondisabled actor Joaquin Phoenix to play the late and legendary quad cartoonist John Callahan. With the movie out in theaters, Tim Gilmer takes a look at the controversy and beyond, finding that despite its flaws, the film is well worth a watch.

PRO TIPS

Hacking an Inaccessible House
Old houses are fun — full of quirks, character and craftsmanship that are most often absent in newer builds. The tradeoff is narrow doorways, small rooms, stairs and generally a complete lack of accessibility. Our DIY guy didn’t let that deter him — from a kitchen sink replacement to a built-in table/accessible food prep area and even a clawfoot tub shower bench, here are a few pointers for making an old home functional without emptying your bank account.

Address the Stress
Stress is an insidious little bugger that can wreak havoc on your body’s systems and exacerbate secondary complications of disability. Limiting lifestyle triggers is ideal, but for times when stress gets the upper hand, Joanne Smith offers diet tips, including a recipe for some delicious anti-stress tea that can help blunt its effects.
