Picture
May 16 - 18
Parent Support Provider Training

hosted by Federation of Families of SCThis three-day training will assist you in becoming a trained parent support provider. Parent Support Providers (PSPs) are primary caregivers who have “lived experience” being actively involved in raising a child with emotional, developmental, behavioral, substance abuse or mental health concerns and have navigated systems and/or services to access treatment and necessary resources. PSPs have received specialized training to assist and empower other families raising children with similar experiences.  Scholarships are available to parents who meet the criteria for becoming a PSP.
In order to attend a training, you must:

  •  Be a parent/guardian with lived-experience raising a child with an emotional, behavior, mental health, and/or substance abuse issue.
  • Have a desire to become a certified parent support provider.
  •  Have a basic understanding of child-serving systems.
  • Be willing to share your advocacy experiences with us.
Volunteer as a PSP, potential paid positions are anticipated in the future.  To learn more or to register, please call Federation of Families of SC at (866)779-0402 or email Pheobe at pheobe.malloy@fedfamsc.org.

Social Communication and AAC/SGDs

AbleNet University

June 12, 2014 11:00am CDT - 45 minutes
Title: Social Communication and AAC/SGDs

Description: The acquisition of social skills is critical in the successful academic inclusion and competitive employment of all individuals, and especially those with disabilities. To communicate one person must “say” something by using: any combination of speech, gestures, writing, pictures, and/or objects, AND at least one person must “understand” what is meant by the: speech, gestures, writing, pictures and/or objects. The way we say the words we say helps us convey our intended meanings. The tone of voice used, facial expressions, bodily gestures we adopt while we are talking all add information and layers of meaning to the words we “say”. Pragmatic models were first applied to the treatment of children with language impairment in the late 1970s. This session will discuss, the study of language use, the impact of language treatment and practical applications for individuals using AAC/SGDs..

New Affordable Care Resources from the National Disability Navigator Collaborative

New Affordable Care Resources from the National Disability Navigator Collaborative

The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) www.aahd.us is pleased to announce the establishment of an Affordable Care Act (ACA) National Disability Navigator Resource Collaborative (NDNRC). The 12 month collaborative is made possible by a one-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation www.rwjf.org. The NDNRC website will be launched on Dec. 1, 2013. The URL for the project website iswww.nationaldisabilitynavigator.org

The purpose of the project is to assist the development of cross-disability competence in ACA CMS funded navigator programs and consider how to assist state-based navigators, connectors and assisters. An estimated 3.5 million people between the ages of 16 and 65 with pre-existing medical conditions or disabilities are currently uninsured. Persons with disabilities lacking current health insurance face at least the following options as key elements of the Affordable Care Act go into effect in January 2014: Medicaid in their state, possible Medicaid buy-in in their state, possible Medicaid expansion in their state, and Exchange-Marketplace insurance coverage.
