Microsoft Word has several features that help document creators and editors to create more accessible documents. More accessible Word documents create more accessible PDF files as well. During this session, you will learn tools and techniques in Microsoft Word to make sure that your documents are more accessible. At a minimum, we will discuss and demonstrate how Word supports creating accessible document titles, properly structured headings, properly structured lists, text equivalents for visual elements, more accessible data tables, using color more carefully, and providing descriptive text for links. Should we have time we will pass along more tips and tricks. You will leave the session with more confidence that your Word documents are more accessible to people with disabilities.

Targeted Audience: K-12 General Education and Special Education Teachers, Administrators and Therapists

Time: 3:00-4:00 p.m. ET

PDF documents can present some significant barriers if accessibility is not accounted for in the source document (ex: Word, PowerPoint, InDesign). In this session, we will discuss the accessibility issues we commonly see in PDF documents and connect them back to the topics discussed in the session on Microsoft Word. We will dig into the Tags Tree and discuss how each of the structures, such as headings, lists, links, and tables should be represented in the PDF. We will also provide some tips on things to watch out for upon conversion from Microsoft Office. We recommend that anyone attending this PDF session either has previous knowledge of Microsoft Word Accessibility or attends the session on Microsoft Word in this series. We will be using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC for this session.

There are two research survey opportunities we would like to share with you. Please see details below on each opportunity to see if it would be a good fit for you and if you would be interested in participating. If you are interested in participating or getting more information, please make sure to reach out to the contact person that is specified for that particular opportunity!
Research Opportunity #1
The Brain Injury Association of America is conducting a survey on PBA. PBA stands for pseudobulbar affect, and is characterized by sudden, frequent, uncontrollable episodes of crying and/or laughing that are excessive or don't match how you feel. Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) wants to know more about people who have PBA and whether or not they can access treatment for the condition. If this sounds like something you or a family member, friend, patient, etc. are experiencing, and you would like to participate in this survey, please click this link. Surveys need to be completed by September 30, 2021.
Research Opportunity #2
This is a study to learn about the role of social communication on social behavior in children, reported by parents and caregivers. Participants will be asked to complete an intake phone call (about 10-15 minutes), and to fill out questionnaires regarding their child's social communication and social behavior abilities (about 30-45 minutes).
You are eligible to participate in this survey if:
Participants will be compensated for their time with a gift-card.
For more information about this study, contact Libby Crook at 216-282-6037 or libby.crook@case.edu, or Dr. Sarah Hope Lincoln at sarahhope.lincoln@case.edu.
This list of free webinars is compiled from around the Web by the Accessible Technology Coalition. Follow the ATC Facebook page for late additions. The SC Assistive Technology Program offers free webinars, too!

There’s room for everyone at the table of learning. But students with learning disabilities often feel undeserving, unheard, left behind in the realities of “the new normal.” Many students cannot fully access grade-level text. Grammar/spelling get in their way of writing. When looking at possible UDL constructs within your school or district, what will you look for in accessible technologies?
Join Jennifer Loucks to see the latest tools in Co:Writer® and Snap&Read™—from PDF annotation, Dynamic Text Leveling, voice typing, to ELL language and translation support. Direct access to the curriculum means every learner’s voice and choice is included—even when learning from remote.
Participants will learn:
Jennifer Loucks is an Educational Support Specialist and Pilot Coordinator with Don Johnston Inc. Throughout nearly two decades at DJI. Jennifer has dedicated her work to empower students who struggle with reading and writing, helping them reach their full potential.

Many people are hesitant about what getting the shot could mean for them, and Glenn Prince, a pastor from Orangeburg, SC, was among them. Prince struggled with whether he should get his COVID-19 vaccination after a difficult experience with another vaccine. He chose to reach out to a trusted friend, also in the BIPOC community, who helped him work through his decision.
“Ultimately, I chose to get the Pfizer vaccine on August 2, 2021, for two reasons,” Prince said. “I did not want my daughters, who were refusing to get the vaccine, to avoid it because of my influence in their lives. I also did not want my congregation to avoid vaccinations for the same reason.”
If you’re also feeling nervous about getting your shot, reach out to someone around you who you know is vaccinated and you trust. Ask them to share their experiences with you, and, like Pastor Prince, consider sharing your hesitation with them.
All of the vaccines available are safe and effective, but each person’s response to the shot might be different. That’s why you should also talk to your doctor or another medical professional you trust about the right vaccine for you. If you need assistance finding a medical professional, scheduling a vaccine, finding transportation, or just have questions, you can also call 800-787-6046, where the experienced staff of Able SC and Disability Rights SC will be happy to help you!
