Description of Webinar: Participants will learn about the use of the CoughDrop App for AAC intervention. Strategies for data collection, modeling, and goal setting within the app will be discussed. Dynamic assessment tools for evaluating a user’s symbol recognition and button differentiation will be addressed. Key approaches for use of the app for AAC intervention will be discussed.

Speaker Biography: Stephen is an experienced Speech-Language Pathologist with a deep-rooted passion for enhancing communication through technology. With a background that began in media arts and music, Stephen’s journey led him to discover his true calling in speech-language pathology. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts with a minor in Music from the University of South Carolina and went on to obtain his Master of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology from South Carolina State University. Stephen’s professional path took shape during his nine years as a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist in South Carolina’s public schools. It was here that he discovered his passion for working with Augmentative and Alternative Communication, finding immense fulfillment in helping children with complex communication needs express themselves. This experience sparked his dedication to AAC, laying the foundation for his future endeavors in the field.

Description of Training: This presentation introduces the fundamentals of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support students with limited communication skills. It will provide practical, research-based strategies for implementing low and high-tech AAC systems in educational settings. Participants will learn: 1. Learn skills to teach students how to use AAC effectively for communication. 2. Understand key components for selecting and teaching AAC vocabulary tailored to student needs. 3. Identify techniques to support AAC implementation for students with challenging behaviors.

Speaker Biography: Sharon holds a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a Doctorate in Special Education from Clemson University. With over 30 years as a speech-language pathologist, her experience includes experiences as an assistive technology specialist and as a behavior specialist for students on the autism spectrum.
