Flood Watch: Be Ready for Heavy Rain and Soaked Ground

Heavy rain is expected around the state of SC over the next few days. The ground is already soaked, which means water may not be able to drain away. This can lead to flooding in low areas, near streams, and in places with poor drainage.

A flood watch means flooding is possible. Be prepared and stay alert. A flood warning means flooding is happening or will happen soon. Take action to stay safe.

What this means for you:

  • Flooding can happen quickly, even away from rivers or creeks.

  • Roads may become unsafe or blocked.

  • Basements and yards could flood.

Downed trees and power lines can happen during heavy rain and storms. Stay away from any downed power lines and report them to your utility company right away. Do not touch or drive over them, and keep children and pets far away!

It is important to know the difference between evacuating and sheltering in place during a flood. Evacuating means you need to leave your home and go to a safer place when officials tell you to do so. Sheltering in place means staying inside your home because it is safer there. If officials tell you to evacuate, leave right away and follow their directions. If they say it is safe to shelter in place, make sure you have food, water, medicines, and a safe spot inside your home until the danger passes.

How to prepare:

  • Move valuable items to higher ground.

  • Never drive through flood waters.

  • Stay tuned to weather updates and local alerts.
