Omega-3 can help children with ADD, experts say

Supplements of the fatty acids omega 3 and 6 can help children and adolescents who have a certain kind of ADHD. These are the findings of a dissertation at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, which also indicates that a special cognitive training program can improve problem behavior in children with ADHD.

In this study, 75 children and adolescents with ADHD were given either the fatty acids omega 3 and 6 or a placebo over three months, and then they were all given omega 3/6 over three months. The study was conducted double-blind, which means that neither the researchers nor the participants were allowed to know whether they received the active capsules until afterwards.
"For the group as a whole, we did not see any major improvement, but in 35 percent of the children and adolescents who have the inattentive subtype of ADHD called ADD, the symptoms improved so much that we can talk about a clinically relevant improvement," says Mats Johnson, doctoral student at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg.

AUCD Annual Meeting 2014

AUCD envisions a future in which all people, including those living with developmental and other disabilities are fully included, participating members of their communities. We see equitable access to supports and services that reflect the preferences and values of diverse communities and that lead to self-determination, independence, productivity, and a healthy and satisfying quality of life.

The 2014 AUCD Conference theme reflects their goal of achieving an elevated level of engagement with our respective and collective communities, networks, and well beyond in order to better inform, enhance, and enrich the work we all do to improve the lives of people with disabilities and their families.

The Power of Engagement is reflected in changes we have made to the conference format to offer attendees more time to connect with one another and with the information presented. This year, we launch a series of poster symposia, where posters will be grouped and showcased together by common themes. We look forward to seeing how this more comprehensive model serves in deepening engagement with the work displayed.

The conference will be held on November 9-12 in Washington, DC
Ink your calendars, get your submissions in, and make travel plans accordingly to participate in this engaging event that will serve in keeping our work relevant and our vision strong.

Brain Injury Association: Upcoming Webinars

November 5, 2014 (Wednesday), 3:00 p.m. Eastern (12:00 Pacific) BIAA Caregiver Webinar: Practical Strategies for Managing Awareness Issues in the Community

Dr. Jennifer Schwartz-Mitchell, Director of Clinical Services, Cognitive Assessment and Solution, Humanim. Often people are discharged from rehabilitation before they have fully grasped how their injury affects them day to day. A lack of understanding of the changes that have happened from a brain injury can lead the person to believe they can do things they are not yet capable to do, such as drive or cook. This webinar will offer an overview of what “deficit awareness” is, and offer some strategies and tools to help the family and the person with a brain injury better manage their deficits as they continue to recover.

November 19, 2014 (Wednesday), 3:00 p.m. Eastern (12:00 Pacific) Business of Brain Injury Webinar:Quantification of Behavioral and Pharmacological Treatment Effects After Brain Injury

Jeff Kupfer, Ph.D., and Dixie Eastridge, M.A. will demonstrate how to identify characteristic patterns of behavior on a cumulative graph and how these patterns change as a function of environmental contingencies, medications, and interactions between these events. They will also show how cumulative graphs may be used to assess various neurobehavioral treatment outcomes.

Electronic Touch Screen Voting Machines Improve Access for Voters with Disabilities

For the first time in South Carolina history, people with disabilities will be able to vote in private and without assistance.

For visually impaired voters, the new electronic touch screen voting machines will feature Braille-embossed navigation buttons, accompanied by audio instructions, to make voting easier.

Voters who have difficulty reading or seeing the screen will now be able to vote confidentially by using the audio instructions feature to guide them through the voting process.

The system is also easily portable, making it accessible to people with physical limitations. The machine is wheelchair accessible and can be placed on the lap. For voters with disabilities that prevent them from physically entering the polling place, the machine can easily carried outside for curb-side voting.

The touch screen voting machine meets the applicable requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Family Connection of SC: Parent Stories

When Family Connection started 23 years ago, it was four moms with children with disabilities who realized the source of their hope and strength for the future of their children came from each other. Then they brought the support they were giving to each other to all parents in South Carolina who needed similar support, and we’ve been doing that ever since.

Learn about the mothers, fathers and children in our state like you who benefit from our services. To read parent stories please visit: http://www.familyconnectionsc.org/parent-stories.html
