BI Survivor Spotlight
"Survivor Spotlight"
Tyrone Johnson
When my day began on Valentine's Day in 2014, it was just like any other February day. The weather was not just cold and rainy for February, but South Carolina was experiencing a brutal ice storm. As I headed out to start patrolling and protect the people of Spartanburg as a Sergeant for the city's crime prevention unit, I slipped on ice and fell to the ground. I then realized I hit my head and wasn't sure to what was going on. A fellow officer appeared and saved my life by calling 911. After that day I have never been the same but I still enjoy the greatest gift in life, life itself. I get to do what I love with those who love me, including the people at the Brain Injury Association.
A year after my injury, I attended the BIASC Statewide Conference in Columbia and it became the only day out of the year where I feel normal. The conference has connected me to others with brain injury that I can talk with and relate to. Every speaker at the conference speaks to me and my injury and for that, I am grateful for this Association.
As a track coach at Spartanburg High School for 18 years and winning 6 girls state championships with my runners, the Run for Thought holds a special place in my heart. Every year, I make sure I come out to the run and walk the 5k for my team and myself, and celebrate every accomplish I have achieved since my injury.

Survivor Spotlight
Rebecca Powell
When my day began on
Friday, July 8, 2011, it was just like any other day. I spent time with my 3
year old son, and went to my weekly Zumba class. That evening, on our way to
get ice cream, my car was t-boned by a speeding car while I was sitting at a stop
sign. After working for one hour, EMS finally got me out of my car. I was then
flown to Greenville Health System where I had to undergo emergency surgery to
remove my spleen. I was in a deep coma with a severe brain injury and had lost
a lot of blood. For the next 20 days, I was in Neuro trauma ICU, and my
prognosis was that if I woke up, I might be able to feed myself.
Six years later, after
a lot of hard work, I am a full time mom to my very active nine year old.
Without the support, resources, encouragement, and friendships that I've
received from the Brain Injury Association, I wouldn't be where I am today. I
will never be the same as I was before the accident, but my recovery can
continue because of the support and resources made possible through your
donations and support of this organization.
Join me on October 21st!
Let's run/walk/roll
together!
If you can not make it, consider giving a
donation.
Hope to see you there.

Disability Employment Awareness Month
Governor McMaster Proclaims October 2017 as
Disability Employment Awareness Month!
How will YOU celebrate this month?
The SC Governor proclaimed that people with disabilities are capable, contributing members of society worthy of full access and inclusion in South Carolina’s workforce. Let's rally to show all of South Carolina that people with disabilities CAN work and WANT to work! Share what employment means to you on Social Media using the hashtag: #NDEAM
Held each October, NDEAM aims to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. NDEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, but its true spirit lies in the many observances held at the grassroots level across the nation every year. Learn how you can support NDEAM by visiting the ODEP website by clicking here.
