Options, Barry Corbet's Classic Guide to Living with
SCI, Now Available Online for Free
Longtime New Mobility editor Barry Corbet published Options, a
guide to thriving with spinal cord injury based on Corbet’s own
experience and interviews with dozens of SCI survivors across the
country. “I want you to share this experience so that you will not
have to muck about in the wilderness for years, as I did, to
acquire it by yourself,” Corbet writes in the preface. Forty years
after it was published, Options
remains some of the most impactful writing about
disability ever produced, and it’s now available online for the
first time.

I'm a
Disabled Teen. My Wheelchair Needs to Grow with Me as I Roll Toward
Independence
Anja Herrman’s wheelchair has been more than a
mobility device. It’s brought the 17-year-old joy and independence

outgrows her current wheelchair’s capabilities, she’s frustrated to
encounter a medical system with little care for her needs outside
of her home or doctor’s offices.

“Over my 21 years of living with quadriplegia, I have
independently cared for my personal needs with minor help from my
husband,” writes Lilly Longshore. “I know this will not last
forever. We are both aging. I will need more help in the future.
And I will have to pay for it myself.” Could moving to Panama be a
comfortable and affordable answer?
