Upcoming Trainings from Family Connection!       Across South Carolina an increasing number of families are navigating raising a child with a disability while experiencing housing instability.   Family Connection is hosting a series of summits for community-serving organizations who would like to learn more about rights and resources for students under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.   Training dates and locations:   July 30th:                                                   August 13th: Lexington Municipal Conference Center    Francis Marion University 111 Maiden Lane, Lexington                      4822 East Palmetto Street, Florence 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.                                9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.                                                                 August 28th:                                              September 18th: The Children’s Museum of the Upstate       Lowcountry Conference Center  300 College Street Greenville                     46 Sigma Drive, Summerville 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m                                 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Register for trainings! CEU Details: AHEC: This program is approved for 0.3 CEU’s (3.0 clock hours) of continuing education by Mid-Carolina AHEC and meets the SC AHEC Best Practice Standards. Participants must attend 90% of the program to receive a certificate of attendance. No partial credit will be given. SOCIAL WORKERS: This program has been approved by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners for 3.0 clock hours of social work continuing education.   This training has been approved for Community Health Worker Continuing Education Units (CHW CEUs) by the South Carolina Community Health Worker Association.     Before the First Day of School Thursday, August 1 6:00 p.m - 6:30 p.m. The first day of school is quickly approaching for all families! Register!     Understanding Your Child's IEP Wednesday, August 14 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. New school year, new Individualized Education Plan (IEP)? Starting the 2024-2025 academic year, SC schools have a new IEP platform (EDPlan SC). Join Dr. Susan Thomas for a virtual session to help better understand your child’s IEP. We’ll cover purpose and required components, quality indicators of a well-written plan and how to measure success. Register!       Positive Parenting for Children with a Disability Thursday, August 22  11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Cindy Tomlinson will present the seven key principles of positive parenting of a child with a disability. This first session in a three-part series will cover ways of creating a safe, positive, learning environment for your child. The series focuses on positive ways to promote children’s development, and is designed for parents and caregivers of children up to age 12--but all parents are welcome. Each session is approved for 1.5 hours of Foster Parent Credit.  Register!     Support Parent Training Saturday August 31 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Are you an SC resident and a parent/caregiver of a child with a disability or special healthcare need? Become a volunteer Support Parent and offer emotional support to other parents who have a child with a similar diagnosis as your child. This four-hour evidence-based training will give you the skills to help educate, inspire, and empower parents and their children to live rich, fulfilling lives.
