CNN: 'A necessary and overdue education':
British Vogue dedicates five covers to disabled trailblazers
British Vogue has revealed five portraits featuring disabled activists, models, and creatives for a series of May 2023 covers, a move the magazine hopes will further important conversations around disability in the media and society.
The new issue highlights how the fashion industry can increase inclusivity and adapt to better support people with disabilities, but it also comes with acknowledgment from editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. “Making this issue was a necessary and overdue education for all — and taught us many lessons we will carry forward into the future,” he wrote in a note introducing the magazine. “Ultimately, these covers and portfolio ask a question: we all engage with fashion, but does fashion engage with all of us?”

Early Childhood Resources
Welcome to Kids Corner!
Once a month, we share disability-inclusive children's books that celebrate, educate, and can start conversations about disability with young readers and their families. Many children’s books about disability focus on a story that reveals a bit of disability wisdom to the reader, but today’s choice is just plain silly! Zoom! by Robert Munsch is about a young girl who is tired of her old wheelchair and works to convince her parents that she needs a new 92-speed power chair to zoom across town. She gets a free one-day trial…and a speeding ticket. Just when she thinks she won’t get to keep the chair, chaos ensues, and only she can save the day in her high-speed chair! Click on the button below for a reading of the book by the author on YouTube.

What Have We Been Up To?
Able SC Visits the White House!
Able South Carolina was invited to the White House (again!) alongside other South Carolina organizations. Why? As people with disabilities, we were chosen to participate in the "Communities in Action: Building a Better South Carolina" forum. The “Communities in Action” Forums host state, local, and Tribal leaders. While there, our President & CEO, Kimberly Tissot, and Chief Advocacy and Independent Living Officer, Natasha Pauling, discussed the barriers in South Carolina to demonstrate that the disability community continues to be left out and discriminated against, as our fundamental rights are often ignored. We are thrilled to have been a part of this opportunity alongside other great SC leaders!
