Autism Society, Autism Is Campaign

The Autism Is campaign acknowledges that no two Autistic individuals have the same lived experience. Autism is both personal and collective—an identity, a community, a culture, and a way of life. It comes with strengths and struggles, moments of joy and challenge, and everything in between.

Throughout April, we're sharing stories that celebrate the diversity of the Autism experience.

Voices of Autism: Matthew's Story

Autism is work. Hard work. The work pays off! A better life is out there for all people with Autism and they need our love, acceptance and hard work."

- Matthew W., Parent.

Read his full story below.

"Autism is a lifetime of never ending hope for your loved one. In my case, my son, Aidan is 30 years-old and living, for the first time in his life, in a group home away from me and his mother (only 10-15 minutes away). Autism is not a barrier to the best life one can live. Autism is a never ending challenge, but if taken on with love and acceptance, you can start to write your own story and not give away that authorship to the condition.

Autism is work. Hard work. The work pays off! A better life is out there for all people with Autism and they need our love, acceptance and hard work. You won't regret it. Aidan has a good quality of life despite having fairly severe autism. We've had some setbacks, but we are striving to keep on moving forward. Leave no stone unturned in supporting people with Autism - they need it and they will love you back."

The Autism Is campaign is shaped by stories like Delyla’s—amplifying the voices and lived experiences of Autistic individuals. We want to hear what Autism Is to you.
