Funding and Advocacy Update

Thank you for your recent advocacy on behalf of BIASC. While the SC General Assembly did not include funding for BIASC—or any other non-state agencies—we are not alone. Many nonprofits were affected, and your continued support matters. This summer, please reach out to your legislators in your hometown, share your story, and let them know how brain injury has impacted your life. If BIASC has played a role in your recovery, be sure to let them know.

We remain committed to our mission and will seek alternative funding through sponsorships and grants. While some programs may be paused, we’re working hard to maintain services—and with the help of our generous Conference Sponsors, the Life with Brain Injury Conference will take place as planned on August 1.

Summer Safety: Preventing Traumatic Brain Injuries
As summer kicks off, activities like cycling, swimming, and sports bring fun but also risks for traumatic brain injuries. Protect yourself and loved ones with simple steps: always wear a properly fitted helmet for biking or skateboarding, closely supervise kids near water to prevent diving accidents, and learn to spot concussion symptoms like dizziness or confusion. Stay safe and enjoy the season!

National PTSD Awareness Day sheds light on the impact of PTSD, which often co-occurs with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in veterans. Together, these conditions can intensify cognitive and emotional challenges, making early awareness and intervention essential. Learn more and explore resources at the National Center for PTSD website.

Stroke is a life-changing event that affects almost 800,000 people in the United States (US) each year. Fortunately, most strokes can be prevented. Learn how to lower your risk.

Brain injuries in older adults can increase the risk of memory loss, cognitive decline, and dementia.
Summer gatherings can amplify these challenges, especially for seniors with past TBIs. Help support brain health with these tips:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Engage in puzzles, reading, or other brain-stimulating activities

  • Practice low-impact exercises like walking

  • Talk to a healthcare provider for personalized guidance
